Greenville, SC (PRWEB) February 08, 2012

Heart disease strikes down far too many people, young and old. Senior Care Corner wants everyone to know as much as possible so families can protect their senior loved ones – and themselves.

Senior Care Corner celebrates American Heart Month this February by helping caregivers and other family members of seniors to learn about the risk factors they can address to make positive changes to their own heart health and that of senior loved ones.

Some heart disease risk factors can’t be controlled, such as age, family history and gender. Other factors can be addressed to reduce the risk of heart disease for senior loved ones and their families, including:

     High blood pressure
High cholesterol/triglyceride levels
Diabetes
Being overweight or obese
Smoker
Physically inactive
Lack of good eating habits
High stress levels

“Addressing the risk factors that are controllable can improve our chances against heart disease,” says Kathy Birkett, registered dietitian and Senior Care Corner co-founder. “There is no time better than now to help our senior loved ones make the changes needed or to do so ourselves.”

Monitor blood pressure and reduce salt intake. Be sure senior loved ones fill prescriptions from their doctors for blood pressure medication – and take it!
Know your cholesterol and triglyceride levels and find out from your doctor if any need improvement. A heart healthy diet can help, but sometimes medications are needed.
With a direct link between diabetes and heart disease, knowing your blood sugar level and controlling it with a heart healthy diet may be enough. Your health care team can help you know what actions are best for you – and your senior loved ones.
Manage your weight. Can it be said enough? Control portion sizes and limit those between-meal snacks and sugary drinks. Being physically active helps, of course.
Heart disease is yet another reason not to be a smoker.
Fighting heart disease is also yet another reason to become more physically active. Your senior loved ones should seek medical advice before starting regular physical activity.
Most people already know the changes they should make to improve eating habits. More fruits and vegetables, higher in fiber, lower in saturated and trans fats, less salt and sugar.
Learn to limit and handle stress. It may feel like stress improves performance but that’s often not true health-wise.

For more tips and discussion, check out Senior Care Corner’s recent podcast, which is also available on iTunes.

Helping senior loved ones to change habits and make improvements on those risk factors can, in many cases, reduce their risk of heart disease – as it can for younger family members too.

The American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francsico

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) January 27, 2012

Until the end of January, 2012, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is accepting public comment regarding its approach to establishing essential health benefits (EHB) that will be covered under the new health care system being developed as a result of the Affordable Health Care Act. The American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) is asking members of the public to show their support for making acupuncture an EHB by sending an email to HHS.

A strong public show of public support for acupuncture as an essential health benefit will draw the attention of policymakers and set the stage for further federal acupuncture initiatives. Alissa Cohan, Director of Communications at ACTCM says the easiest way to voice support is by sending email to EssentialHealthBenefits(at)cms(dot)hhs(dot)gov—and be sure to include name and address.

“Americans are increasingly finding optimal health care is not in Western medicine or Eastern medicine—but in integrative medicine with treatments that draw from the best of both traditional and contemporary ideas and treatments,” said Cohan. “This is an opportunity for us to make access to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment universal, so that more can benefit from its well-documented benefits.”

Cohan says that personal messages are much more effective than chain messages, and provides tips for what to write. They include:

1. Name

2. Address

3. Main point: acupuncture should be designated as an essential health benefit

4. Brief description of how you or a loved one has benefited from acupuncture

TCM restores internal balance and health, and effectively treats a wide range of illnesses and chronic pain. Increasing numbers of people are turning to acupuncture to cure insomnia, back pain and thoracic pain, neurological disorders, anxiety, fertility issues, allergy relief, weight loss, addiction and substance use, sports performance enhancement, immune support, and general health maintenance.

In 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, a health insurance reform law intended to ensure every American has access to affordable, quality health insurance. Starting in 2014, most health plans will be required to offer a comprehensive package of items and services to patients. Under the new law services like emergency, maternity and newborn care, prescription drugs, and many preventive and wellness services will be covered in these health plans.

“The public comment period is coming to an end soon, so we are asking people who have benefited from holistic health care to act right now,” said Cohan. “The college and many other organizations are available to help you deliver your message, if needed.”

About the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM)

The American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) has been at the forefront of educating students in Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Bay Area since its inception in 1980. The college offers two degree programs—the Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine (MSTCM) and the Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM). Both programs provide exceptional professional education.

Those who receive treatment are informed that sterile, disposable needles will be used. Because the needles are thin, solid and pliable, most people feel little to no discomfort. Patients typically feel energized and relaxed, and are given a recommended course of treatment and self-care based on a specific TCM diagnosis.

San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) January 12, 2012

On December 20, 2011 a new study released by the Workers Compensation Research Institute reports that the average cost of a workers compensation claim in Texas grew 5% in 2009. The study suggests that a major reason for rising costs is an increase in the amount of time that workers spend away from work on temporary disability leave.

Fit For Work, a San Antonio-based Occupational Health and Industrial Medicine firm, provides companies with a solution to the rising costs of workers compensation claims. They use comprehensive, onsite prevention and early intervention programs to intervene before the need to file a workers’ compensation claim occurs. These steps will ultimately increase productivity and lower costs for companies over a wide spectrum of key indicators, such as lost time, restricted duty, overall costs, and OSHA incident rates.

“Fit For Work has been working with both large and small companies for over a decade, and has been able to lower workers’ compensation costs for every single client by more than 50%,” states Tom Tobin, MBA, OTR, CEO of Fit For Work. “We are an antidote to many of the healthcare cost issues arising in industrial and manufacturing settings.”

A combination of Fit For Work occupational and physical therapists, athletic trainers, exercise physiologists, and board-certified professional ergonomists provide early intervention programs to help prevent and reduce the incidences and severity of musculoskeletal disorders and repetitive stress injuries, recognize signs and symptoms before injury occurs, and prevent and reduce the frequency of these injuries. Onsite programs provided by Fit For Work accomplish this through the utilization of cost-effective engineering, administrative, and/or behavioral controls. Following the manufacturing mindset of preventive “equipment” maintenance, early intervention affords employees the opportunity to address musculoskeletal issues when they begin and not as their “equipment” fails.

“Fit For Work has provided onsite occupational health services to Frito Lay for over 14 years. During that time they have more than exceeded our expectations for injury reduction and cost containment for ergonomic related injuries and illnesses,” states Joe Kutach, Safety and Security Manager at Frito Lay.

About Fit For Work:

Fit For Work is a privately held Occupational and Industrial Health practice developed around a model of prevention and early intervention. Founded in 1998, Fit for Work continuously seeks to provide large and small employers alike with a non-traditional service model. This model combines a progressive approach to injury prevention and treatment based on an underlying and proven principle that putting the right worker in the right job in as safe a manner as possible results in decreased costs, decreased injuries, increased profitability and increased productivity. The practical results include significant reductions in recordable incidents, lost time injuries and workman’s compensation claims, and the potential for subsequent reductions in insurance premiums.
San Marcos, TX (PRWEB) April 2, 2007

Texas families struggling with overweight children will be able to access world-class treatment close to home starting this summer. Healthy Living Academies today announced the establishment of Wellspring Texas, the first summer weight loss camp in Texas. Healthy Living Academies is the leading organization of treatment programs for overweight and obese youth, with two boarding schools and seven summer camps. Each year, Healthy Living Academies programs help thousands of young people return to a healthy weight.

Due to changes in diet and activity patterns, millions of Texas families are struggling with overweight or obese children and teens. Texas rates for childhood obesity are among the country’s highest. In 2004, between 36-42% of school-age children in Texas were overweight or obese.

According to Healthy Living Academies clinical director Dr. Daniel S. Kirschenbaum, a professor at Northwestern University Medical School, there are several key factors that differentiate Healthy Living’s approach to weight loss from that of most weight loss camps. “Wellspring Camps focus not just on weight loss through diet and activity management, but also address the psychological and emotional issues that often prevent successful weight loss by sustaining problematic eating and inactivity. Through a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, an introduction to healthy eating habits, and daily activities, campers at Wellspring Texas can expect to lose four to five pounds per week while enrolled, and continue to lose weight after returning home and over the next year.”

Wellspring Texas is located on the campus of San Marcos Baptist Academy. Located in San Marcos, San Marcos Baptist Academy was founded in 1907 and is regarded as one of the leading schools in the Southern United States. “We’re very excited to partner with the leading organization of weight loss programs for children to establish the first summer weight loss camp in Texas,” said Vic Schmidt, president of San Marcos Baptist Academy. “Healthy Living Academies has demonstrated unprecedented outcomes at its other programs, and we expect the same results at Wellspring Texas to benefit Texas children and their families.”

Wellspring Texas campers can expect a wide variety of exciting and rewarding activities this summer, including most team sports, swimming and personal training, aerobics and fitness activities. According to Wellspring Texas program director, Ondrej Jurik, campers will also take advantage of the many nearby natural attractions. “Wellspring Texas campers will enjoy tubing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and hiking in the Hill Country,” said Ondrej. “Campers will also receive Wellspring’s renowned nutrition and culinary training so they’ll be able to continue weight loss at home.”

Wellspring Texas is a program of Healthy Living Academies. To learn more about Wellspring Camps visit http://www.wellspringcamps.com. Healthy Living Academies is the leading organization of treatment programs for pediatric and adolescent obesity.
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) December 21, 2011

HealthForumOnline (HFO), a nationally-approved (APA, ASWB, NBCC, PSNA, CA-BBS) provider of online continuing education (CE) for psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals announces the addition of a new online CE/CEU course, Caffeine Use as a Modulator of Mood, Emotions, and Neurocognitions to their extensive online CE resource library.

Caffeine is the most widely used psychotropic stimulant among consumers, with upwards of 80-85% of the U.S. adult population ingesting coffee or tea daily, as well as consuming other foods containing caffeine (Hughes, Oliveto, Helzer, Higgins, & Bickel, 1992; Smith & Tola, 1998). The average caffeine intake among U.S. consumers has been estimated at approximately 200-280 mg per day (Anderson & Horne, 2008). This intake amount is equal to an average of 4 mg per kg body weight per day, and some high-level caffeine consumers can even exceed 15 mg/kg daily (Smith & Tola, 1998).

By the mid-1990s tea and coffee became the most popular drinks on the planet and 86% of the 12.7 billion gallons of soda consumed annually contained caffeine (Lundsberg, 1998). The popularity of caffeinated drinks will likely continue to increase given the widespread popularity of coffee chains and the advent of caffeinated energy/sports drinks in recent years. Further, as of 1996, 2000 or more over the counter drugs available were estimated to contain caffeine: as much as 200 mg of caffeine per dose on average (Hughes et al., 1992).

These statistics are important because caffeine consumption influences mood, neurocognition, and alertness. Further, preexisting vulnerability to attentional deficits or emotional distress may predispose individuals to use or even abuse caffeine as self-medication. Thus, the vast array of caffeinated products have potential for abuse, physical harm, and negative health consequences, if used in large amounts either alone or in combination with one another, in a situation analogous to polypharmacy. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000) includes diagnoses of Caffeine-Induced Disorders, such as Caffeine, within Substance-Related Disorders.

Taken together, the effects of caffeine use and resulting withdrawal from caffeine abstinence are important topics for healthcare providers. However, the social sanctioning of the “Starbucks” movement may explain why overuse or abuse of caffeine can be minimized or disregarded among healthcare providers. This online CE/CEU course explores caffeine use/abuse from a psychological and physiological viewpoint. A review of research on the stimulant effects of caffeine, many of them similar to other commonly abused substances, and the complex neurochemical and neuroanatomical mechanisms underlying such effects on one’s mood, cognition, and physiology is provided. Lastly, clinical applications and treatment implications are presented.

Psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied health professionals can chose from HFO’s 20 categories of continuing education (CE) topics related to health psychology and behavioral medicine (i.e., ethics, cancer adaptation, women’s health, cultural diversity, eating disorders, reproduction/sexuality, aging/gerontology, pediatric behavioral medicine, assessment, chemical dependency, chronic/acute illness, clinical intervention, group therapy, infectious disease, long-term care, neuropsychology, pain management, spirituality, LGBT issues) containing more than 75 online CE courses that are fast, convenient and cost-effective. All HFO CE courses and supporting materials are available online or as downloadable, transportable PDFs. Participants print their own CE certificates. Lastly, HFO routinely updates our online CE courses and enables customers to review these updates for free even after they have completed the CE activity and generated their CE certificate.

For more information on this course or a complete listing of titles in our online CE resource library, visit HealthForumOnline.com.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 16, 2012

Over-weight linked to over-eating or binge eating has been the focus of Lap Band surgeons and diet companies for decades. Lap Bands are more popular than ever and often covered by medical insurance to ease the physical maladies of obesity. Surgery however always has the possibility of other physical complications.

So, is there another way to shrink the size of a stomach and reduce the appetite? Mary O’Maley, trained in the procedure that is like a lap band hypnotic technique which arose from the UK, discusses the success of this newer use of hypnosis to produce the same physical responses Lap Band procedures create. This program provides listeners thought-provoking information about this painless, easy procedure. Turn to Hypnotic Lap Band with Mary O’Maley and Dr. Carol Francis

“We are always at odds with our mouths desire to taste and chew food and our body’s wish to not be overwhelmed by too much food which it needs to process or metabolize. So, is hypnosis a way that helps people feel their stomach is full before they spend too much time tantalizing their taste buds?” asks Dr. Francis. Mary O’Maley addresses techniques, length of time these hypnotic interventions take and effectiveness.

Dr. Carol Francis, Clinical Psychologist and Fitness Trainer is also the author of “If You Can’t Stop Eating, Maybe You’re Hungry: Reset Your Cravings” published in 2010, directs this interview to explore these questions.

Champaign, IL (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

No two people are exactly alike. And, according to Daniel DiTuro and Ingrid Yang, co-authors of “Hatha Yoga Asanas: Pocket Guide for Personal Practice” (Human Kinetics, 2012), the ability to modify postures to meet individual abilities is what sets yoga apart from other physical activities. “Being flexible enough to plant your forehead on your shins, sit in lotus, or wrap your legs behind your head is not indicative of good yoga practice,” Yang explains. “Instead, a sense of calm, contentment, and focus in each pose is the true foundation of yoga practice.”

According to Yang, to fully experience the benefits of yoga, practitioners must listen to their bodies and breathe, regardless of level of ability. “As with any physical activity, improvement comes with practice,” Yang says. “Range of motion, mental alertness, strength, stamina, and focus will all improve with regular and dedicated practice.”

She stresses that yoga is a practice and not a science or strict regimen. “There is no finish line or complete product,” Yang explains. “It is simply the daily practice of awakening to each moment and discovering what comes up.”

In “Hatha Yoga Asanas: Pocket Guide for Personal Practice”, Yang and DiTuro have designed an accessible reference of more than 150 classic hatha yoga asanas depicted by four-color photographs. Each pose is identified in both English and Sanskrit and is accompanied by short and simple steps for performing the movements. The asanas range from gentle yoga for beginners to more advanced forms and cover a variety of hatha yoga styles, including ashtanga, vinyasa, and lyengar.

Yang believes hatha yoga helps to unify people regardless of shapes and constitutions. “Humans share the link of humanity and collective yearning to discover the truth within themselves,” Yang says. “That truth can be uncovered through the practice of hatha yoga, because how you relate to your inner self can be revealed through outer expression.”

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

DNA Response, Inc., provider of interactive marketing and order management, will donate 5 percent of proceeds from sales of NutraSonic products from February 1, 2012 through February 29, 2012 to Sister to Sister: The Women’s Heart Health Foundation, in honor of National Heart Month.

The Sister to Sister foundation was established in 1999 to prevent heart disease in women through cardiovascular screenings, education and behavioral change. Sister to Sister has provided more than 80,000 free heart health screenings and counseling interventions while educating more than 200,000 women at heart health fairs in 17 cities across the country.

“We are honored to donate to a foundation that inspires and motivates women to make risk-lowering changes,” said Ranjit Mulgaonkar, CEO of DNA Response, Inc. “Heart disease is the number one killer among women. We want to help increase awareness of this disease and save lives.”

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease claims the lives of more than 500,000 women each year. And only 55 percent of women realize that heart disease is their number one killer. Luckily, this disease is preventable by learning about the risk factors, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity, and making healthy lifestyle changes.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) February 01, 2012

Valentine’s Day is a time to cuddle and canoodle with that special someone – whether they’re spouses, significant others or four-pawed best friends! According to an online survey conducted by No. 1-rated Petplan pet insurance of more than 6,000 American pet parents, 60% said they would rather receive Valentine’s Day kisses from their four-legged, furry friends than their two-legged sweethearts.

And the love doesn’t end there. Petplan’s survey reveals that 78% of pet parents are planning to shower their furry family members with tokens of love this Valentine’s Day, from traditional treats and toys to grand gestures like heated beds, car seats and special outings to the spa or the playground – one lucky dog will even get custom portraits!

According to the survey, 62% of pet parents estimate they will spend up to $ 10 on gifts for their pets; 27% will spend up to $ 25; and 11% will spend more than that – the sky’s the limit!

But kisses and pet-perfect presents are far from the only way pet parents include their four-legged family members in their Valentine’s celebrations, according to survey results:

Match Made in Heaven – 25% of pet parents who took the survey reported that their pets have their own Valentines. Objects of affection range from treasured toys to fellow furry friends.

Please Mr. Postman – 20% of respondents reported that their pets will be declaring their love by sending out valentines of their own!

“When it comes to our pets, we wear our hearts on our sleeves,” says Natasha Ashton, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Petplan. “The survey results reflect the love we have for our pets and the lengths we go to show them our thanks for the unconditional love they give us every day.”

Phoenix, AZ (Vocus/PRWEB) February 24, 2011

Growth Hormones Direct published an article on the prevalence of genetic health risk factors, the role of homeopathic Growth Hormones therapy in decreasing health risks and the side effects of Growth Hormone therapy. Many are aware of the danger presented by what is referred to as the obesity epidemic, but there aren’t as many who are aware of the similarly far reaching consequences of what some are beginning to refer to as the insomnia epidemic.

Both obesity and insomnia can have drastic health consequences. While obesity has traditionally received a great deal of attention due the negative health that often arises as a consequence of the condition, insomnia continues to receive significantly less attention as well as action.

Dr. J. Ronald Willis of Growth Hormones Direct said, “Insomnia can be just as serious as obesity when it comes to the individual’s general health. And even worse is the fact that obesity and insomnia often go hand and hand. They feed off of each other and escalate conditions that may have otherwise been easier to avoid or control.”

Growth Hormones Direct’s homeopathic Growth Hormone treatment is an effective asset in both weight management/weight loss and insomnia treatment. Not only does it offer many advantages that benefit the dieter or individual who wants to lose weight for health purposes, but it increases the restfulness of sleep (a great aid for the insomniac). And due to the all natural, homeopathic formulation there are no known side effects of Growth Hormone therapy through Growth Hormones Direct.

Growth Hormones Direct urges consumers to watch ‘Science Meet Nature’ as they reap the benefits of optimizing their hormone levels through proper use of the homeopathic growth hormone formula. Optimal hormone levels allow individuals to enjoy increased general health. Growth Hormones Direct is an Arizona based distributor of quality health foods, supplements, pharmaceuticals and neutraceuticals.
